Country houses, barns and welcoming spaces near the border. Here are five venues to explore, with practical photography pointers and links to real weddings where I have them.
Before you make a shortlist
A lovely backdrop helps, but the best wedding venue is one that works for your people and the way you want to spend your day. When you visit, think about where guests will gather, the route between ceremony and reception, and what happens if the weather turns. The photos tend to be better when the timeline leaves you time to enjoy all of that.
This guide keeps the original mix of country house, barn, farm and hotel options. Four are in North Wales; the fifth, Grosvenor Pulford, is in Cheshire near the Welsh border and is included as an alternative for couples looking around Wrexham and Chester.

01 · Conwy Valley
Plas Maenan
A country house above the Conwy Valley, with a terrace and a landscape that can become part of the story without taking you away from your guests for long. Ask about the plan for portraits in wind or rain, as well as the timing of the ceremony and meal.

02 · Conwy area
Hafod Farm
For couples drawn to a barn and a more relaxed countryside feel, Hafod Farm is worth a look. The change of light between barn and outdoors gives a lovely variety to candid photographs. Ask where your ceremony, drinks and meal would happen on your date.

03 · Pen-y-ffordd
Clawdd Offa Farm
A farm venue near the Wrexham, Mold and Chester routes with indoor and outdoor ceremony options. Open space can give you room for guests to mingle and for a quick group photograph, though a wet-weather plan matters just as much.

04 · Rossett
Rossett Hall
A hotel option between Wrexham and Chester for couples who want a celebration and accommodation in one place. When viewing, look at the indoor photography options as well as the gardens, especially if you are planning a winter wedding.
05 · Just over the border in Cheshire
Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa
This is not in North Wales: the hotel is in Pulford, Cheshire, close to the border. It may suit couples searching either side of Wrexham and Chester who want a hotel setting. Check garden access and indoor options with the venue for your season and wedding schedule.

What makes a venue easy to photograph?
Time with your guests
Good documentary photographs come from the day you actually have, not a long list of staged shots. Ask how long the changeovers take and whether there is somewhere comfortable for guests to gather while rooms are prepared.
Build in a short window for family groups and a few relaxed portraits. If the scenery is a big reason you chose the venue, we can use it without disappearing for an hour.
A sensible weather plan
North Wales weather can change quickly. When visiting, look for window light, shelter and a place for a handful of family photographs indoors. The best plan works in both sunshine and rain.
Check practical details too: supplier access, ceremony restrictions, travel between spaces and when you can use the outdoor areas.
Questions to ask on your venue visit
- Which spaces are included in the quoted price, and which guest numbers suit each layout?
- What happens to an outdoor ceremony if the weather changes?
- Where can we take a small set of family photographs without moving guests too far?
- Is there enough time between the ceremony, drinks, meal and evening guests?
- Are accommodation, catering, access and supplier arrangements clear in writing?
